Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want.

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I’ve also lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for the past 4.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York back in 2013 when I landed an international role at a media company that sent me all over the world to work. You can read my full story here

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I’m currently freelance writing, coaching professionals through career transitions, and working on a few small business ideas while splitting my time between Berlin, the US, and India.

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding REAL jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living more purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’m not a full-time digital nomad and I’m not a full-time corporate professional: I’ve done things a bit differently and I think it’s feasible for more people to live “off the beaten path” this way. I hope my blog lets you see that it’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Read on or get in touch to set up a 1:1 session with me: elaina@lifebefore30.com.

Yes, I Just Moved Into a Hut in Hawaii (And What Following My Intuition Has to Do With It)

Posted on January 27th, 2018

I just want to clear things up now. For the record, I did buy a one-way plane ticket to Hawaii and move into a glorified toolshed in the rainforest on the Big Island for one reason and one reason only: because something told me to.

And this is a short post to encourage YOU to tap into and follow your wildest, deepest intuition.

People often ask me in real life how I decide where to move next as a digital nomad, so this is an answer of sorts to that question. Signs. While Hawaii is a particularly strong case of gut instinct, India came into my life in a similar way and I flew myself to Malawi earlier this year because that country kept crossing my consciousness for some reason.

I’ve been getting signs to come to Hawaii for about a year and a half now. As a dedicated international traveler, exploring more of the US never dawned on me and Hawaii just seemed like a cliche destination. I had no interest.

Until I somehow started understanding the very rich spiritual life of Hawaii and its people and feeling her call. She tip-toed into conversations with beautiful souls in India, California, and Europe. She crept into my awareness with an uncanny numbers of friends suddenly having Hawaii connections I never knew about. She popped up as I suddenly started meeting Hawaiians in Europe or on the mainland US in great numbers, or catching references to Hawaii in books or movies I loved. As I started waking up, this became the next logical step.

And that’s pretty much it. I flew back from a 3-month stint in Malawi and India last month for Christmas and decided this was the time to explore that call.

I cried the minute the plane touched down on Hawaiian soil.

As I type, I hear nothing but the chirping of birds and the rustle of the wind through lush ferns and palms and berry-dotted branches below. I’m overlooking a few huts scattered across the eco-commune I’m living on, spontaneously recommended to me by a pair of loving digital nomads I serendipitously lived with in Oakland last year for a few weeks.

I’ve cancelled ALL subscriptions to email newsletters with job listings and have happily responded, “Hi, I’ve just relocated to Hawaii and may never resurface” to a few job opportunities.

My inbox is full, however, of freelance writing and editing opportunities (I even got offers to work on a few books this month! Yay!), new clients to coach, and other independent work opportunities that allow me to stay financially viable while living close to the land and continuing my process of spiritual growth, healing, and self-expansion.

Out here, I start my day with 90 minutes of yoga and meditation, cook breakfast in an open-air shared kitchen, work for 3-4 hours, explore the island in the afternoon, and enjoy community activities here in Puna like ecstatic dance, night markets, and beach gatherings that take place every week with the same group of zany free spirits called to be here. I end the day with more meditation and journaling. To me, this is life and work in harmony.

The fact that I’ve indefinitely moved out to Hawaii of all places is still wracking me with emotion — good, bad, and (you’d be surprised) very ugly. Regardless, I hope this example is living proof that we all need to honor and follow our intuition when it comes to callings both big and small.

If something is calling to you, do it. If it’s a place, go there. If it’s a person, reach out. Some part of each of us is tapped into the wider universe and are being pulled onto the life course we need to be on.

Aloha and love,

Elaina

If this wasn’t a sign that I was on the right plane, I don’t know what is.
