Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

Two Ways to Brainstorm Yourself Into a Better Life in 15 Minutes

Posted on June 23rd, 2018

I recently made a pretty big decision to permanently move to Bali (as “permanently” as makes sense with my gypsy life).

But making the decision to root down in a place where there are most definitely no “usual” jobs to be found is like jumping off a cliff and building the parachute on the way down.

Thankfully, I have multiple freelance income streams that I’ve built up over the years, so I can steadily maintain a modest life almost anywhere in Asia.

Me, happy in Bali

Yet I still find myself looking at my bank balance as I do my monthly budget and cringing — if anything were to happen to some of those streams, I would find myself packing up and heading back to a normal life, enslaved by some 9 to 5 job.

And that’s exactly the fork in the road where my beautiful friend (let’s call her Nina) finds herself. We sat at an outdoor cafe in the heart of Ubud, motorcycles zooming down the street, women in traditional sarongs balancing offerings on their head, bound for temple — the harmony of an island whose name translates to “ceremony” in full bloom — and we were distraught.

Nina had looked at her bank balance this morning and calculated that she has three months left in Bali before she’s dead broke. The clock is ticking and she needs a plan. She cannot leave the island of the gods.

You may be like Nina, traveling and exploring and dreading going back. Or you may have a steady full-time job and just know you need to work for yourself. In either case, I’ll share the same two brainstorming tactics I share with Nina and with many of my clients who are rapidly shape-shifting their lives.

Tactic #1: Set a timer for ten minutes, and in a totally stream-of-consciousness state, write down all the ways you can make money.

It’s really important not to judge or filter out any options at this stage. Your list could include things like:

– Start my own pet-sitting business

– Sell jewelry from India in the Christmas market

– Host a monthly yoga workshop and charge $15/person

– Get a part-time bartending gig

– Write an e-book and sell it online

This is also a great exercise because it reassures you of the myriad ways to earn a living. You don’t have to work as a lawyer or supply chain manager, you literally can go make smoothies in Australia on a work holiday visa if shit hits the fan. And life will go on.

If you’re creative and entrepreneurial, this is a great way to rapidly generate business ideas. For me, this list — when I’m really writing from a state of flow and no-mind, no filter — surprises me with what ideas have been lurking around in my subconscious.

Once you’ve finished, you may find yourself reassured of all the possible avenues to keep your life afloat or maybe a little overwhelmed by all the options. Circle three items from the list and decide to explore them more in-depth.

Tactic #2: Set a timer for five minutes and finish this sentence: I want to start (doing X).

What do you know deep down you want to start doing? I regularly do this exercise with my coaching clients to get them to word-vomit up all things they know they want to introduce into their lives.

Your list could include things (big or small) like:

– I want to start a juice cleanse.

– I want to start a morning meditation routine.

– I want to start freelancing.

– I want to start journaling.

– I want to start dating more.

You can also flip this exercise on its head and do the I want to stop (doing X) version to brainstorm all the things you want to cut out of your life that no longer serve you.

– I want to stop eating meat.

– I want to stop drinking as much.

– I want to stop fighting with my lover.

– I want to stop working for free.

– I want to stop snoozing my morning alarm.

Again, once you’re done, select three items from each list and make them happen.

The beauty of this part of the brainstorming process is it usually tends to yield ideas that are not necessarily work related, but things that build a foundation of wellness and well-being in your life that then support a transformation in your perception of your self-worth and income generation — a happy feedback loop!

You can apply this general concept of no-mind, rapid brainstorming to almost anything in your life, but these two methods consistently help inventory and prioritize change-making

As for me, this type of brainstorming has (recently) helped me start doing group facilitation work and I’m potentially launching a new brand and coaching offering in an area I never thought I’d be working in. I’ve discovered small and big ways I want to change my life and the free-writing component gets me deeper into my inner truth.
