Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

Trust and Let Go

Posted on May 6th, 2018

It’s one thing to believe in the guidance of the universe and another to experience it first hand, time after time.

And time after time, whether it comes to travel, my career, freelancing, relationships, or life at large, I’ve been getting the same message through direct experience: trust and let go.

I think back to the fall of 2016, when I got back to the US from traveling for over a year. I had worked my way through my savings and was renting a room in Oakland, unemployed and completely unsure about what was in store next. And somehow just enough coaching clients would come in for me to make rent. A random opportunity to write content for a new company would come up and pay my living expenses for another few weeks. In a very real way, the universe had my back. I had followed my heart and traveled the world — and I was going to be just fine.

Then my former job with Uber came up, right when I needed it most. A friend from university who I hadn’t spoken to in 5 years wrote to me, having randomly thought of me for a position a friend of hers was recruiting for. And it turns out the position was a perfect fit. I submitted my resume, did three rounds of interviews, and in 10 days I was on a flight to Mexico City, deployed for my first assignment as an international city launcher for Uber’s $500 million mapping program. The insanity! The synchronicity!

Then I was guided into — and out of — that experience in the most divine timing. It gave me exactly what I needed for as long as I needed it. I left Uber in June 2017 without a plan and with just enough savings to float me for a few months until I figured out a more steady freelancing income stream. And since then, the universe has continued to give me ideas and opportunities, taking me to Berlin, Malawi, India, Hawaii, California, Burning Man, and Bali in just the last 10 months.

Of course, I do my part. I take action, try new things, put myself out there — but I always marvel when the right thing just comes through just in the knick of time. I’m now committed to living in Bali and staying freelance for as long as I can, and work just keeps on coming.

I must admit, my free-wheeling life can be downright stressful. I never know exactly where my next “paycheck” is coming from. I never know where I’m traveling to next or how long I’ll stay. I constantly fight back the fear that I’ll have to go home and go back to a “normal life.”

This whole trust in the universe thing doesn’t just apply to work life, by the way, it’s come into play time and time again for relationships, too. With my nomadic lifestyle, I’m always making amazing connections with friends and lovers alike, and they — or I — are always leaving (or, happily reuniting). I’m constantly being reminded to let go and to honor the divine plan the universe has for each of these souls, too.

This kind of thinking on such a big and small scale requires me to know that if I’m living in alignment with the universe — meaning if I live from my heart, respect others and nature, and have the purest intentions for my life — the universe has my back.

So when I catch myself feeling fearful or wanting to control what’s going on, I have to remind myself: TRUST AND LET GO.

When I see others wanting to control too much of what’s outside of their control, or feeling scared about taking a big risk, or unable to let go of an old relationship or even an old pattern, an old way of being, I remind them: TRUST AND LET GO. It applies to everything.

This is what I tell myself: “I am part of a much bigger plan. I am alive and thus provided for by the universe. I am a small being in a big world, my path swirling and colliding with the paths of others, all managed by divine intelligence. I must do my best. I must listen for the right guidance and act on it. But most of all, I have to trust and let go.”

So where does the balance come in of surrendering (which we often think of as not doing anything) and still actually doing what we can?

This is what I mean by “listening for the right guidance.”

Very often, it’s happened that when there’s a big question in my mind, I ask the universe about it and then I wait to tune into my intuition for the answer. And very often, what happens next is I’ll get the idea to reach out to someone, to post a certain message, to take a course, to go eat at a certain place, to sit down next to a person, to ask for help, to travel somewhere new — and there will be signs and messages that come that allow my path to further unfold in what I believe is the divine direction.

My question is answered by my own intuition, the divine in me speaking to myself, the microcosmos connected to the macrocosmos.

I also have witnessed myself being better able to tap into this intuition by living in a way that I believe is in alignment with the universe. By staying aligned, I know I can trust myself to receive her guidance and to let go into what’s naturally unfolding for me. Here are some practical ways I do that:

  • Practice yoga and meditation daily
  • Observe a natural daily rhythm by waking up and going to bed at the same time daily
  • Express gratitude at every opportunity
  • Be kind and loving towards both humans and animals
  • Try not to waste any resource: food, money, opportunity, etc.
  • Abstain from all drugs and alcohol that would interfere with my clarity and direct communion with the universe
  • Maintain a vegetarian diet, the most compassionate diet for nature and the cleanliness of my body
  • Pray out loud, mostly just asking for guidance and listening
  • Spend time in nature and beautiful places
  • Don’t swear (which I believe pollutes my own mind, the minds of others, and all my surroundings)
  • Don’t kill any other living being, even mosquitoes
  • Pay attention to the lunar cycle and stay in tune with the movements of the sun and moon (even just trying to catch the sunset or observing what phase the moon is in every day)

In general, I just try to live a peaceful existence, taking best possible care of my physical body and the natural environment as I can. I believe this keeps me in harmony with the flow of all life and increases the chances that I’ll be pushed in the right direction or permitted synchronicities that keep my needs met — and actually take me farther than I ever thought possible.

Some of these things may seem unrelated or even hard to achieve or silly or unnecessary, but my experience has shown that the more I’ve incorporated those elements, the stronger the syncrhonicites have been, the clearer my intuition has spoken, and the more directly I feel nurtured by a force outside of myself.

And — this is important — I always trust that I might not get what I want, but that I will always get what I need. This allows me to trust and let go, keeping fear at bay and recognizing my limited realm of control in a much bigger picture.

Sometimes my wants or needs take a backseat so the wants and needs of others can be met, and sometimes the opposite will happen.

This philosophy and these daily practices have been hugely beneficial for me and have directly manifested in my life year after year. I’ve experienced this universal guidance so much that I really can vouch for the fact that it’s operating for you as well, and you can tap into this even more by experimenting with the practice I listed above.

I always wanted to travel for some time, but I always assumed that I’d have to go back to a “normal life” eventually. But by surrendering, I’ve actually gone further than I ever thought I could and I’m literally living my dream life right now: living a locationless lifestyle, surrounded by my ideal community, nesting in a private villa in Bali, and building beautiful relationships.

I am so, so grateful.

I am so, so glad I surrendered.

I hope this helps you, too, to trust and let go. Know that we are all held by the universe and surrendering to that is one of the greatest joys of being human.
