Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want.

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I’ve also lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for the past 4.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York back in 2013 when I landed an international role at a media company that sent me all over the world to work. You can read my full story here

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I’m currently freelance writing, coaching professionals through career transitions, and working on a few small business ideas while splitting my time between Berlin, the US, and India.

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding REAL jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living more purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’m not a full-time digital nomad and I’m not a full-time corporate professional: I’ve done things a bit differently and I think it’s feasible for more people to live “off the beaten path” this way. I hope my blog lets you see that it’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Read on or get in touch to set up a 1:1 session with me: elaina@lifebefore30.com.

Shape Your Beliefs, Shape Your Destiny: 50 Short Mantras You Should Be Using Every Day

Posted on May 14th, 2015

“You can have anything you want if you will give up the belief that you can’t have it.”

— Robert Anthony

Our lives are the stories we tell ourselves about our lives.

I believe that by consciously cultivating what we see and how we think about what we see (our beliefs), we take control of who we become.

I also think our beliefs can be, but not always are, choices. Much of what we believe as adults is a product of observations we made about the world during our early childhood. We also have a brain that evolved roughly 200,000 years ago when the first homo sapiens emerged.

Therefore, in order to create change in our modern lives, we have to defeat our animal brain that enshrouds us in a dark paradigm of fear, scarcity, doubt, and vulnerability that was once useful for our survival as hunters and gatherers.

Especially when we are making difficult decisions or taking risks, we need to confront and dismantle this “dark paradigm” and literally talk ourselves into the light. By removing harmful ideas, influences, and belief systems, we make way for ourselves to dream, achieve, and flourish.

In other words, we have to get out of our own way.

We have to actively choose our worldview.

And we have to practice doing that daily.

Here are 50 of my favorite phrases that I use to literally talk myself into the light in both my personal and professional life. Practice meditating over these ideas on a daily basis. Let them evolve from the category of “wishes” into “beliefs” and finally into the knowledge of what you know to be true. (Much of this inspiration has come from Nick Williams and Dr. Robert Anthony who I recommend you read NOW.)

It’s important to recognize that human beings all suffer from confirmation bias, a psychological tendency to select evidence from our environment that proves our already-existing beliefs. Actively combat your biases. Choose your beliefs. Understand that inner change produces outer change, not the other way around.

Introduce these positive mantra into the driver’s seat of your life — and witness dramatic results.

  1. I believe in my ability to define and follow-through on my dreams.
  2. I will allow myself to dream.
  3. I will aim as high as I can imagine, and then some.
  4. My path will unfold over time.
  5. My path is unique.
  6. I trust my path.
  7. Other people can provide inspiration and good examples that help to uncover my own abilities.
  8. I believe in spreading happiness and love through my work.
  9. Every interaction with another person is an opportunity to be my best self.
  10. I am making choices in every moment, and in any moment I can change what choices I am making.
  11. If I bring good energy to the world, I will receive good energy in return.
  12. I can make mistakes and I can ask for forgiveness, from myself and others.
  13. I can forgive others, readily and earnestly.
  14. I can be a different, better person than I was yesterday.
  15. Other people can be different, better people than they were yesterday, and I will honor that.
  16. All people want, and deserve, respect, and I can give them that.
  17. I am freer than I have been taught to think I am.
  18. My friends and family will support my dreams because they want me to succeed.
  19. Success is a given, and I deserve it.
  20. Acknowledging the success of others does not detract from my own success.
  21. Life is not a zero-sum game; we can all be winners.
  22. Taking care of my body has a direct impact on my success and well-being.
  23. I have important work to do in the world.
  24. It is good to do work that comes naturally to me.
  25. I will use myself as a vehicle to bring joy into the world around me.
  26. There will be enough money to sustain me doing what I love with the people I love.
  27. I value my own experience in doing my work in the world more than I value the approval or admiration of others.
  28. I will focus on the best-case scenario instead of the worse-case scenario.
  29. I will open myself up to recognize my own ignorance and to pursue learning.
  30. Life is a mystery, a process, an adventure, and I will feel at peace with its constant challenge and uncertainty.
  31. I can love what I do and make a living while doing it.
  32. I can imagine, create, and embrace change.
  33. Life will provide me with endless opportunities, all I have to do is keep my mind and heart open.
  34. I will consistently do things that scare me and I will become stronger and harbor less fear.
  35. I experience feelings, but I am not my feelings.
  36. I can feel one way and act another.
  37. I will make the right choices.
  38. I will have as much time as I need.
  39. The power to accomplish everything I am meant to accomplish lives within me, including the humility to ask for help.
  40. I will not play roles in life; I will live authentically.
  41. I am an important part of a greater ecosystem of life here on Planet Earth.
  42. When I feel down, I will trust in the power of my human spirit to replenish itself.
  43. When things become difficult, I will tackle each problem with love and patience.
  44. I was born with a purpose and I am discovering that purpose every day.
  45. There are many sources of wealth and wellness in my life.
  46. I will take everything one day at a time.
  47. I am ready to take the first step.
  48. I will be my biggest fan.
  49. I am good enough as I am.
  50. The world is depending on me.

Imagine a world where everyone not only believed in these ideas, but embraced them as their core principles for living. Inspiration would be contagious and the human race would breathe peace and prosperity!

By placing our focus on these kind of empowering, affirming, and life-giving thoughts, we unlock our potential to be an unquestionable force of calmness, strength, and change in our world.

As Muhammad Ali said, “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.”

Step into my office!

Five years ago, I changed my whole life in 30 days. I scored the job of my dreams, quit my job in New York, sold everything I owned, moved to West Africa, and never looked back. Read about it here.

Now I use Office Hours to help my clients do the same.

Do you want to travel but are scared to quit your job?

Do you want to find a job overseas but don’t know where to start?

Do you wake up in the morning dreading what’s ahead?
