Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

When Problem-Solving Gets in the Way of Big Transformation (or Big Travel Plans!)

Posted on July 9th, 2018

We’ve been taught to be good little problem solvers, but sometimes our preoccupation with solving problems keeps us from living life.

Most recently, I’ve been helping one of my coaching clients switch from a career in supply chain management in the Midwest to fulfilling his big dream of living in the Middle East. He’s well on his way to moving to Egypt, but he still likes to get in his own way. That’s been one of my biggest roles as his coach: keep him from overthinking.

After months of hard work, my client is almost ready to buy a one-way planet ticket to Cairo and enjoy at least a year dedicated to changing the course of his entire life

Throwback to how good life is in Cairo!

Yet he still likes to find ways to create problems to solve — a tactic that effectively puts more distance between him and his goal since he’s spent the majority of his life in a mindset of working towards a goal instead of actually enjoying the fruits of reaching a big one.

Like many of us, his nervous system is used to the yearning and anxiety of planning instead of the relaxed joy of fulfilling a dream.

Let’s call him John. So John will do things in our calls like ask me what will happen when his tourist visa expires in Egypt after the first three months. When I explain the process, he replies, Oh that sounds very complicated, maybe I just shouldn’t go.

Or he tries to invent problems. Actually, I need a new car. I should probably spend some of my Egypt savings buying a new car in case the old one breaks down on me, he tells me another day.

“John,” I tell him lovingly. “You’re solving problems you don’t yet have. Your car works fine. If you leave in two months, do you want to be paying car payments every month while you’re in Cairo loving life and your fancy new car is sitting in a garage in Michigan?”

He nods.

“If it breaks down and you can’t get to work to earn the last $2,000 of our budgeting goal, then we should solve that problem when it arises.”

A light goes on. I continue.

“And visas are navigated by every person who’s ever left their home country, aka hundreds of millions of people. You are blessed with being American, so visas are issued easily by almost every country on the planet. You will have plenty of resources to help you through that once that time comes. That time hasn’t come.”

The whole conservation shifts.

And this is what I’ve had to do time and again with friends and family and clients who erect challenges and problems on the path between them and where they want to be because it’s simply what they are used to doing.

I always have to remind them that there’s no point in solving a problem that isn’t immediately upon us. The universe will never give us a problem too big to overcome because we’ll have the tools to tackle it at exactly the moment it arises in our life.

And we just can’t predict that. We don’t have the tools now, but we’ll have them then.

So there is no point in worrying about things that may come up in the future but actually haven’t presented themselves yet. We’re just not equipped to handle those future problems. We don’t have all the information now.

The underlying lesson here is trust: Can we trust ourselves to know what to do in every moment of our lives, moment-by-moment? And can we trust the universe not to overwhelm us with anything we’re not ready for?

If we can trust, we can embark on some insane life journeys.
