Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

Mediocrity Agreements

Posted on January 19th, 2019

How many connections or relationships do you have in your life that are keeping you locked in the status quo?

How many people do you just “hang out” with, who also work the same kinds of jobs and live the same kind of life you live and don’t challenge your perspective, don’t inspire you to be more or do more in the world?

How many people are you spending time with who you know would actually be threatened if you started upping your game, started doing what you always dreamed about doing, started moving forward at a much faster pace?

You’d leave them behind, that’s for sure. And they wouldn’t want that.

It’s not to say these people have bad intentions for you — not at all! It’s just that they are not the kind of relationships that motivate and support your higher evolution.

They are relationships that make a lot of sense when you’re in one comfortable place in your life. The relationships makes sense when you’re both in the same place with the same goals (or lack thereof). They don’t make sense one of you decides to work on yourself and become more of what you’re capable of being.

When I first heard this term — mediocrity agreements — I knew exactly what it meant. And I knew who I was playing it out with.

I realized there were people in my life who were showing up to show me how small I was playing, who were upping my game by just sharing their ideas and presence and perspective on life with me. They were mirrors so that I could see how much more I was capable of. And they supported me in becoming that.

There were other people who were very obviously not. They were not inspiring to be around, but just comfortable. They would never look at me and be like, “What are doing with your life?! Let’s get out of here.” They were happy to be complacent and comfortable and when I was around them, I would feel the same.

Once I realized where and with whom I had unspoken “mediocrity agreements” with, it changed my social circle. I didn’t go and drop anyone out of my life or tell anyone off or do anything drastic that had anything to do with someone else — the drastic action was within.

I started creating more space. Not reaching out as much to the old crowd and spending more time listening to myself. I started new projects and ideas and started working on them in my spare time instead of hanging out with those people.

And once I did that, I started to notice who else was coming into my life. Were new people spontaneously showing up? Were new people who were more motivated, excited, and playing bigger in their lives start interacting with me more?

The answer is yes. When I was willing to create more space, listen to myself, and start moving forward — even if it meant on my own, for a little while — new and more supportive and inspiring relationships showed up.

Sometimes there’s a period of loneliness, when we take a step back to re-evaluate who we are spending time with and if those connections are serving both people or not.

Space has to be created for us to shift.

Then, once we shift, new people and experiences arise to support us where we’ve moved to.

But we don’t get there by staying stuck, by unconsciously agreeing to be mediocre, by not inspiring and motivating one another. That’s what we’re here for, after all, to serve one another and to support one another so we can grow and evolve in the best way suited for each of us.

I invite you to see where you may be playing into mediocrity agreements in your life — and then to create more space to reconsider where you really want to be going in life and if those around you are helping you move in a more positive direction or just keeping you stuck.

Did this hit home for you? Send me a note to elaina@lifebefore30.com or join my inner circle Facebook group where I share on a regular basis what’s going on in my nomad life of travel, growth, and adventure.
