Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want.

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I’ve also lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for the past 4.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York back in 2013 when I landed an international role at a media company that sent me all over the world to work. You can read my full story here

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I’m currently freelance writing, coaching professionals through career transitions, and working on a few small business ideas while splitting my time between Berlin, the US, and India.

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding REAL jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living more purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’m not a full-time digital nomad and I’m not a full-time corporate professional: I’ve done things a bit differently and I think it’s feasible for more people to live “off the beaten path” this way. I hope my blog lets you see that it’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Read on or get in touch to set up a 1:1 session with me: elaina@lifebefore30.com.

Make the Law of Attraction Work for You

Posted on November 28th, 2015

You probably know that remarkable person who travels the world and always comes home like, “And the people were just so kind! Everyone invited me into their home for supper and let me hold their babies and, wait, look at this beautiful jade necklace a woman in China gave to me! She just gave it to me!”

And you also probably know that other remarkable person who travels the world and always comes home like, “Not my kind of place. Everyone wanted to rip me off, my camera was stolen, and then I got food poisoning and spent two days in the hospital. It was a rough trip.”

These two people could have gone to the exact same place and interacted with the exact same people, and had two drastically different experiences. Why? Because of the Law of Attraction.

The Law of Attraction goes like this, worded in three different ways: 1) what you receive from the world is what you give, 2) your experience of the world is shaped by the energy you bring to it, and 3) you attract what and who you are.

I recently experienced this exact phenomenon at the infamous Full Moon Party in Thailand. Before I went, half the sources I consulted said it would be a bunch of belligerently drunk 18-year kids and I’d want to emergency helicopter myself off the island within thirty minutes, the other half said it was a genuinely great time. My verdict? I wound up having the time of my life. From the moment I stepped onto Koh Phangan, I wanted to meet everyone, get to know them, dress up, dance, and live like it was my last night on Earth. Oddly enough, everyone I met was like that, too! I didn’t even see people being irresponsible, disrespectful, rude, or sloppy. Could this be some kind of coincidence? No, the obnoxious party-goers probably did exist, but my positive energy attracted positive energy, so my experience was dictated by what I brought to the table.

In other words, the old adage: “You don’t see the world as it is, but you see it as you are.” This is great news, because it means you are 100% in control of yourself and who you choose to be. Happiness is a choice. Being generous is a choice. Living the life you’ve always wanted is a choice. You just have to decide to be that person, to live that life, and to be what you want to receive.

This all may sound obvious, but it’s something so rarely practiced. We know we get from the world what we put into it, but most times we take everything as a given: this is just how I am, and that is just how the world is. We don’t realize that by deciding to change ourselves, by bringing our best selves forward, by choosing to be happy and open and alive, that the world around us responds in kind, and it, too, changes in order to welcome a better person. The universe perceives our energy. If we’re supplying a negative energy, the world around us contracts and shirks us. If we supply a positive energy, the world expands and embraces us.

I must sound like a huge hippie, so here’s another example. Let’s say you’re feeling undervalued at work. Instead of acting and feeling negative about your work environment, you decide to be what you want to receive. You place an extra emphasis on appreciating your colleagues. You reach out to someone who helped you last week and send them a heartfelt thank you. You drop in your boss’s office to let her know you’re happy to be working for her and you’re excited about the week ahead. You bake cookies and leave them in the break room. You become a ray of light in your own life and in the lives of those around you. And guess what happens? You slowly begin to receive it back. Your whole world brightens up when you decide to be the spark it needed.

The Law of Attraction applies to everything. Your best friend isn’t listening to you? Be there for her and listen with your whole heart. The guy your dating isn’t giving you the attention you deserve? Get dressed up, feel sexy with or without him, and be the girl of his dreams for a night — then see how he wakes up. Are the neighbor’s kids keep trampling on your lawn? Bring over dinner one day and sit with their family for a few minutes. Make a choice. Change the vibe. Alter your fate.

It all comes down to knowing what you want from the world and then deciding to be it, with or without the promise of reciprocity. It’s like giving a thoughtful gift to a friend without expecting anything in return, not even a thank you. If you’ve ever actually tried that, you know it feels incredible to drop the expectations, to be pure and generous, to put someone else first. Now expand this idea: you yourself are a gift you can give to every person you encounter, in every moment you live. By being something beautiful, the world’s infinite beauty will find and surround you, too.

Step into my office!

Now I use Office Hours to help my clients do the same.

Do you want to travel but are scared to quit your job?

Do you want to find a job overseas but don’t know where to start?

Do you wake up in the morning dreading what’s ahead?
