Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

Is “Manifestation” Just a Buzz Word or a Useful Tool? My Real World Experiences + 5 Steps to Actually Manifest Things

Posted on March 28th, 2018

Whenever someone talks about “manifesting” their dreams, not gonna lie, I roll my eyes. If you’ve read some of my other pieces on here, you’ll note that, for the most part, I really like to be practical.

Yet lately I’ve had such powerful experiences of “manifesting” that I had to share what I’m learning and how you can concretely do the same.

Last week, I moved into my own private villa in Bali, on the outskirts of Ubud, surrounded by rice terraces, with my own private pool — for $600 a month. Which is how much I was paying to live in a 10×10 TOOL SHED in Hawaii with no running water, no electricity, and no toilet.

My own real villa! In Bali!

My previous home: a hut. (Ok, in HAWAII but still a hut.)

As a nomad, finding a good home base wherever I go is extremely important, and this is my DREAM place. And I manifested it!

How did I do that? I realized that there are 5 ingredients that go into a real formula for manifestation. These are the steps you can follow to do the same.

1. Have a vision

I’ve learned it’s important to be able to see what you’re after. You might not be a visual person, so it’s okay if you can’t actually “see” it in your mind, but in that case try making a list and putting your vision down in words. I’m not terribly good at seeing things in my mind, but I am good at knowing what my criteria are and not settling for anything else.

Here’s an example from my American best friend, who had a lofty vision of manifesting a remote job, full-time as a product manager in blockchain, with a work permit for the EU included so she could live in Berlin half the year and travel the world the other half. Pretty picky huh?

Well, her vision was clear, she did the rest of the steps below (especially the hard work part) and within a MONTH she found her dream job, including a promotion and a visa for the EU! Boom.

2. Say it out loud

This sounds ridiculous but I swear it’s made the biggest difference for me. In the past, I was scared of jinxing myself, but now I’ve learned to verbalize my vision. “I will find my perfect private villa in Bali with a swimming pool and rice terrace view with no one around to bother me for less than $700 per month.”

The view from my kitchen.

When it comes to matters of the heart — like romance, friendship, or a much-needed personal revelation — saying it out loud makes all the difference in the world. When I was living on Hawaii’s Big Island (known for its power of manifestation), I sat down and talked with the universe about my desire to have a little romance come into my life: “Dear universe, my heart is open to meeting someone special who shares my values, is emotionally available, and has long hair and a six pack.”

And within a day, the universe sent me someone and we started seeing each other. (True story.)

Unfortunately, this person did not share my values, so I had to go back and get more specific (another important part if saying it out loud is that it forces you to get specific). “Dear universe, let me clarify. I would like to meet someone who is (insert Elaina’s long list of dating prerequisites). But please stick with the long hair and six pack thing, that was just fine.”

And a few days later, that exact kind of guy walked into my life. I did the recognition and decisive action bit and the rest was history. (Hint: For all you other single people out there, try using manifestation in your love life instead of Tinder!)

3. Pray with your feet moving

Naturally, I had to go out and do the work in order to “manifest” a villa. I spent weeks messaging listings from AirBnb, Facebook groups, recommendations from friends, and Google. I spent the first two days in Bali driving my scooter around like a maniac and seeing more than a dozen properties in person. For the most part, they were terrible. Everything looked great online but terrible in person. Half of them were still under construction or not available for my full 3 month stay. I was totally disheartened.

4. Recognize when “it” shows up

But finally, I walked through the doors of perfection, my vision standing there in real life. And I knew that was it.

Sometimes it’s hard to recognize a good opportunity when it’s staring you in the face. You might go on a first date and come away feeling unsure, or you might have a job offer in hand, but lose sleep over whether to take it or not. You might see a house on the market that would make a great rental property, but you pass it up.

Without the ability tor recognize your vision in real life, there’s no way to “manifest” anything.

The view when you walk in the door. Love at first sight.

5. Take decisive action

And lastly, if you have confidence in your vision, speak it out loud to the universe, do all the hard work, and recognize that it’s appeared, it’s all useless if you can’t make a quick decision about it.

When the owner showed me the house, he was asking $800/month, which was a bit over my budget. I stayed calm, kept the twinkle out of my eye, and sat and negotiated. After a healthy session of Balinese bartering, I had it down to $600. At last, I smiled, shook his hand, and thrust a few hundred dollars into his palm as a deposit. No messing around!

This goes for more than just deposits on real estate. If you found the girl, put a ring on her finger. If you landed a client, ink the contract. If you got the offer, say yes. Life will pass you by if you don’t just drop in and make a decision.

Pray with your feet moving!

Whatever you want, go out and try manifesting something today. With 5 key elements (vision, verbalization, hard work, recognition, and decisive action), you can start making concrete changes in your life.
