Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

How to Kick Fear Out of Your Consciousness

Posted on December 14th, 2018

Five years ago, I told the universe I wanted to live a life where I was free.

Since then, I’ve managed to live out of just two suitcases and travel to more than 60 countries. I haven’t had a permanent address since.

One year ago, I told the universe I wanted to live a life split between Bali, India, and the United States.

Today, I sit on my balcony looking out into the jungle in Ubud, freshly returned from a three-month stint living in Rishikesh, India.

Yet despite the generosity of the universe — which, for some reason I don’t understand but don’t dare to question, has granted me my wishes — I suffer from regular episodes of paralyzing fear and anxiety.

Going back to working for someone else would be so much easier. Having a regular paycheck. Sliding into a pre-existing space in society. Being someone my parents could explain to their friends at dinner parties.

But I insist on doing it the hard way. I insist on living the only way I know how, commanding myself to live authentically, unconventionally, and meaningfully.

And with that comes the requirement to put up with lots and lots of fear.

What if this doesn’t work?

How am I going to make it?

Why should anyone listen to me?

What happens if I wind up hopelessly unemployable?

What if I run out of money?

Where does someone like me even fit in the world?

Where do I belong?

Where am I going to live next?

How am I going to pay my taxes?

From the mundane to the philosophical, the fear can be astronomical when choosing to walk an alternative path in life— your own path.

Walking this path requires stumbling around in the dark almost constantly. Because if it’s truly yours, no one has been there before. No one has left the lights on for you.

So if you can see only a few feet in front of you and have only the vaguest sense of which direction you’re heading in, you’re doing great.

And if you feel scared, even better.

Because marching in the direction of fear is how we uplevel our entire being. It’s how we become the next highest version of ourselves. People like us don’t want to stay stagnant. We want to grow, evolve, and understand what we’re really here for. We do this by feeling and then facing fear. And then crashing through into the next dimension of ourselves like winning levels on a video game.

Feeling fear is an opportunity to use the superpower we all have as humans: to feel fear and to not respond instinctively. Unlike most animals, we can feel fear and consciously evaluate whether or not it’s even valid. And then proceed to do whatever we’re scared of anyway.

It’s the path of acceleration. If we want to accelerate our personal growth, we choose fear.

From lots of experience of walking this path, I’ve learned there are two main types of fear: fear+dread and fear+excitement.

The fear+dread feeling tells me to stay away. I feel this way about bungee jumping for example. A very appropriate circumstance to feel fear. The dread part goes “no, you really don’t need to do that so please don’t, that could mean death.” I also feel this way about conventional jobs of almost any kind. It’s just not necessary and could also mean death.

The fear+excitement is like a giant finger pointing me in the direction I need to go. I feel this way when I decide to move to a new country I know almost nothing about. I feel this way when I decide to launch a new program and put myself out there doing something I’ve never done before. I felt this way when I decided to become a Reiki Master and work professionally with cosmic energy (what?? and open myself up to all the dark forces, too?).

Speaking of energy, there’s the very significant lesson I’ve learned that fear is the greatest illusion and obstacle we face in the human body. It’s a trick that comes with living on Earth and living in three dimensions, a trick that sucks our energy and keeps us living in the matrix. Once we realize it’s a trick, a drain on our life force energy, it loses its power and we reclaim all of that energy to be used for our mission.

You can realize it’s all a trick by doing the following:

  • Write out everything you’re afraid of. Name every big and little fear.
  • Feel it all as deeply as possible. Where is it in the body? If you sit with it and allow it to be there, does it shift? If it shifts in the body, can you feel it shift in the mind?
  • Realize that once fear is named and felt, it loses a lot of power. Watch the fear with a steady, courageous gaze. Watch it until it slowly backs away, inching its way out of your consciousness where it doesn’t belong.
  • Get in touch with your worst case scenario. Can you be okay with this? What would allow it to be okay?
  • Get in touch with your greatest vision for your life. Focus on this best case scenario. If you even have a vision, this is a very good sign. This is your soul telling you what’s already going to happen so you can get ready. If you stay clear and stay focused on this vision, it will happen, it’s just a matter of it manifesting in Earthly time.

The beauty and power of an authentic vision will help you face and overcome the challenges that may come. It will help you face the very things you’re afraid of. If the life envisioned is so good, it’s worth facing any number of scary things, isn’t it? It’s worth facing the uncertainty?

Above all, I’ve come to understand that fear is resistance. Fear is the mind being unwilling to be at peace with all potential outcomes. If you can foster the ability to be totally accepting and completely nonresistant to the flow of life, then you have nothing to fear.
