Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

Do This With Your Next To-Do List and Get in Touch With Your Truth

Posted on July 26th, 2018

I don’t think I’ve had a day in the past five years, even as a wandering gypsy nomad, where I haven’t known what to do that day. I always have a plan.

And I always have a to-do list.

Yet I’ve recently had the experience of showing up at an event or trying to work my way through a blog post when I feel myself just hitting a wall. I hear a voice from within: I don’t want to do this.

It’s a silly example, but I experienced this exact wall-hitting-moment at a contact dance event in my new home of Ubud, Bali. I arrived to the dance space on Saturday morning, having calculated everything the night before: Alarm set with enough time to do my morning yoga practice. Have a little bite to eat before the dance starts. Calculate the drive time needed. Dozens of little plans my mind is automatically making once I write “11am contact dance” in my daily planner.

But then I actually got there and realized that not a single bone in my body wanted to dance. I didn’t want to be touched. Ew. I sat in the corner for an hour trying to work up the will to get on the dance floor until a very kind part of myself said, You don’t have to stay. You can change your mind. And I left. Liberation!

Since that morning, I’ve been employing a very simple tactic of checking in with myself before I make my next move. Before I go to meet a friend for dinner, I check in: Is this in integrity with myself? Do I want to meet this person? Am I even hungry? Before I go to a workshop, I check in: Do I really want to do this? Before I accept a new freelance client, I check in: Is this in alignment? Is this for the greater good of both of us?

This new practice may be making me slightly more flaky in an already flaky world, but for me, it’s freeing me up from showing up in my life out of obligation and a sense of “should.”

Now that I’m in touch with my deeper needs and desires, I’m constantly checking in to see if what I have planned is really what’s in my best interest and the best interest of the people included in those plans.

Thankfully, in a place like Bali, telling a friend that “you’ve tapped into your deeper inner knowing and a dinner date in not what’s in the highest” is perfectly acceptable by all parties.

That’s also a powerful lesson: Can we push ourselves to radically accept what is in the best interest of everyone around us, regardless of the effect it has on us? If a close friend doesn’t want to do a girls trip to Miami because she really needs time alone or because she wants to invest that airfare in her new website, can we fully honor that? Or can we be the catalyst for the conversation that leads to her realizing and vocalizing her needs, arising from a place of authenticity and inner knowing?

By all means, we still need to have plans and make commitments in life, but to the greatest extent possible, can we look into the areas where we have full authority over what we’re doing and make sure that our choices are coming from a place of alignment with authentic needs and desires?
