Hi, I’m Elaina and I want to help you live life on your terms, find a career you love, and travel as often as you want. These are the best years of your life and you deserve to be FREE!

I’ve lived, worked, and traveled to more than 60 countries, including some pretty off-the-beaten path destinations like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Paraguay. I lived out of a suitcase as a full-time nomad for 5.5 years, ever since leaving my management consulting gig in New York in 2013. You can read my full story here. I’m now living my dream, settled in Bali, Indonesia, fully independent and working happily on projects that support my deepest passion!

What makes my story unique is that I’ve traveled AND built a professional career, working for companies like IBM and Uber over the years. I’ve also spent long stretches of time freelancing and traveling adventurously through South America, Asia, and Africa. I now make my living helping others break out of ordinary living and get clear on their mission in life. I get paid to help people MANIFEST THEIR DREAMS like I did — how cool is that?

I write about self-development, digital nomadism, charting unconventional life paths, finding jobs overseas, pursuing long-term travel, and living purposefully in a fast-paced, confusing world. There’s simply no one-size-fits-all model for creating a life you love. I’ve always done things a bit differently and I think there are SO many feasible ways for people to live “off the beaten path”. I hope my blog lets you see what’s both possible and practical.

I started this blog because I want to help you find an exciting career, travel the world, break the norms, and develop yourself both personally and professionally. Drop me a line at elaina@lifebefore30.com or apply to work with me directly!

10 Tips To Keep Yourself Healthy While Traveling

The awesome part about traveling is having the ability to detach yourself from your usual environment, enjoy a new culture, and make memories with friends and family.

Traveling also has its downsides. It’s easy to forget about your overall health while on planes, buses, boats, and staying in hotels. Not to mention, public places are breeding grounds for all sorts of bacteria that could definitely ruin your trip.

Here are some tips and tricks to help keep your body and mind in check during your travels.

  1. Keep your hands to yourself. Try to not touch too many surfaces while traveling. Bathrooms, door handles, and tables are homes for all kinds of bacteria. Wash your hands and make sure to keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth, and nose. Travel with hand sanitizer and wet wipes to help keep these germs in check.
  1. Bring spare contacts. This one is a godsend for anyone who wears contacts daily. You never know when one might drop on the floor, rip, or get dirty. Always bring extra contacts (and contact solution) so you’re not left wearing your glasses the rest of the trip. It’s also handy to bring an extra contact case in case you lose or break yours unexpectedly.
  1. Don’t forget about sleep. Your body needs time to recover from walking, traveling, the time change, and being away from home. You won’t regret a quick cat nap while you’re traveling. Bring some essentials from home like ear plugs, eye masks, a neck pillow, and anything else you need to stay comfy and get the best sleep possible.
  1. Always eat breakfast. Traveling usually means early mornings, long days, and a lot of activity. It’s important you put some fuel in the tank to keep you going. Even a light meal like cereal, oatmeal, or fruit can give you the nutrition you need. Look for foods with high fiber and protein to keep you full and help maintain a healthy digestive system while on the road.
  1. Proper eyewear is essential. Remember to pack glasses, sunglasses, and a protective case so they don’t get scratched or break while traveling. Make sure your sunglasses provide UV protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Retailers like Warby Parker have a great selection of quality sunglasses to choose from that provide 100% UV protection. Find a pair that will be comfortable while on the go. Plastic frames tend to rest easier on your nose bridge.
  1. Stay hydrated. Most travel will include walking far distances and sometimes even extreme heat. Keep your body nourished so you avoid feeling sick or dehydrated. Having a water bottle attached to your backpack or tote bag is a great way to have access to water at all times. S’well has a fun selection of stainless steel bottles in different shapes and colors. Try to find a large bottle that can keep a lot of water cold for long amounts of time — you don’t want to have to keep refilling every half hour.
  1. Have sunscreen handy. No one likes getting a horrible sunburn which could leave them down and out for the rest of the trip. Did you know the risk of developing skin cancer doubles if you’ve had five or more sunburns in your lifetime? Purchase small travel sized bottles of sunscreen, as well as larger sizes for longer trips. Always make sure to re-apply and get the highest SPF you need for your skin type. People with fairer skin tend to burn worse than people with a darker complexion, so be sure to take that into consideration when choosing which sunscreen is right for you.
  1. Pack your own food. This one is probably something a lot of people don’t consider, but can actually be very helpful while on the go. Making food instead of dining out for every meal allows you to save your pennies — and your calories — for when you really need them. Make sandwiches or salads to bring with you as you explore or plan a fun date to eat outside in a park. You can still enjoy the local cuisine, but eating at restaurants is not essential for every meal. This will save you money, time, and can keep you from eating junk food or other unhealthy meals.
  1. Take proper precautions. Bring vitamins and other health supplements to help your body keep up with your busy schedule. Daily multi-vitamins, probiotics, and melatonin can all assist you in various ways. I always travel with Vitamin C, iron supplements, and Omega 3 fish oil.
  1. Have a basic first-aid kit with you. Make up a small travel-size kit to put in your bag before you leave. Blisters, cuts, and bug bites can all be fixed with some cream, gauze, or a band-aid. Even small cuts can get easily infected in new environments, which could lead to unwanted trips to the local hospital in a foreign country.

I hope these tips help you keep your general health in mind while traveling. Never neglect your body, it’s the only home you have on the road!
